Validation of Permafrost Active Layer Estimates from Airborne SAR Observations

چکیده
In permafrost regions, active layer thickness (ALT) observations measure the effects of climate change and predict hydrologic elemental cycling. Often, ALT is measured through direct ground-based measurements. Recently, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) measurements from airborne platforms have emerged as a method for observing seasonal thaw subsidence, soil moisture, in regions. This study validates SAR-derived estimates three regions Alaska, USA using calibrated ground penetrating (GPR) geophysical data. The remotely sensed matched field within uncertainty 79% locations. average GPR-derived validation dataset was 0.14 m while pixels coincident with GPR data 0.19 m. region near Utqiaġvik, appeared slightly larger than Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region, smaller observations. northern foothills Brooks Range, Toolik Lake, there minimal bias between estimates. These findings suggest that compare well situ probing GPR, making SAR an effective tool to monitor

Determinants of carbon release from the active layer and permafrost deposits on the Tibetan Plateau
The sign and magnitude of permafrost carbon (C)-climate feedback are highly uncertain due to the limited understanding of the decomposability of thawing permafrost and relevant mechanistic controls over C release. Here, by combining aerobic incubation with biomarker analysis and a three-pool model, we reveal that C quality (represented by a higher amount of fast cycling C but a lower amount of ...
متن کاملAssimilation of ice and water observations from SAR imagery to improve estimates of sea ice concentration
In this paper the assimilation of binary observations calculated from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of sea ice is investigated. Ice and water observations are obtained from a set of SAR images by thresholding ice and water probabilities calculated using a supervised maximum likelihood estimator (MLE). These ice and water observations are then assimilated in combination with ice concentr...
متن کاملAnalysis of Automatic Road Extraction Results from Airborne Sar Imagery
Automatic extraction of roads is a present research topic. Many applications like topographic mapping, navigation applications, or image registration could profit from such algorithms. This paper is concerned with automatic road extraction from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. An approach originally developed for the extraction of roads in rural areas from optical imagery with a ground p...
متن کاملComet Dust from Airborne Leonid Storm Observations
For the past five years, rare Leonid meteor storms offered unique access to cometary dust by spectacular manifestations of recently ejected dust grains, which could be observed by exceptional meteor observing techniques. The final storms, those of November 19, 2002, measured the dust distribution in a comet dust trail far from the position of the comet itself. The measured spatial and particle ...
متن کاملSAR interferometry: Tropospheric corrections from GPS observations
Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) techniques have been recognised as an ideal tool for many ground deformation monitoring applications. However, the spatially and temporally variable delay of the radar signal propagating through the atmosphere is a major limitation to accuracy. The dominant factor to be considered is the tropospheric heterogeneity, which can lead to misinterpreta...
